Fereydun

Fereydun (فریدون)

Fereydun is the son of Abtin, a descendant of the mythical king Jamshid. Fereydun overthrew Zahak with the help of Kaveh the Blacksmith. Instead of killing the evil Zahak immediately, Fereydun, acting with divine grace, imprisoned him in Mount Damavand, choosing to restore order and balance to the world rather than simply enacting vengeance. Late in his 500-year reign, Fereydun divided his kingdom among his three sons. Driven by jealousy, Salm and Tur murdered their brother, Iraj. This betrayal destroyed Fereydun’s dream of peace, leading him to appoint Iraj's grandson, Manuchehr, to avenge the death, initiating the long-standing Iran-Turan wars. Fereydun passes away at the end of a long, 500-year reign, broken-hearted by the betrayal and murders of his sons. According to Abolala Soudavar, Fereydun is partially a reflection of Cyrus the Great.
